El macizo del Mont-blanc es una cadena de montañas de 400 km2 de superficie que se encuentra en el vértice que une a Francia, Italia y Suiza. La cima mas alta pertenece a Francia e Italia y a ella se debe el nombre del macizo, Pico de Mont-blanc (o Monte Bianco), siendo las cimas suizas las más bajas del macizo (puerto de montaña de la Forclaz 1527mts). La frontera imaginaria que divide el pico en dos se acordó después de sucesivas guerras entre sardos y savoyardos.
El pico del Mont-blanc es la cima más alta de los Alpes con 4810 mts de altitud. Sin embargo, el imponente pico no es la atracción turística de la zona, el macizo cuenta con varios glaciares, entre ellos la Mar de Hielo (Mer de Glace), accesible por medio de un tren de cremallera que sale de Chamonix hasta Montenvers y las cabinas o escaleras que te dejan dentro del glaciar o Mar de Hielo. Otra atracción importante es la estación de esquí de Chamonix y el Valle Blanco (la Valée Blanche) desde donde se aprecian las Agujas de Chamonix, entre ellas la Aguja de Midi, y otro enorme glaciar, el Glaciar de los Blossons. El Valle Blanco o Valée Blanche tiene uno de los teleféricos mas altos del mundo que llega hasta la la falda de la Aguja de Midi, el teleférico panorámico del Mont-blanc (el teleférico mas alto del mundo es el de los Andes venezolanos, que sube el Pico Simón Bolivar). Esquiar la Valée Blanche es un acto deportivo de alto nivel, ya que no hay pistas balizadas; se esquía sobre un suelo glaciar lleno de grietas, que cuando nieva mucho quedan tapadas a modo de trampa, y en la parte más alta en la Aguja de Midi solo se puede pasar a pie, y si no está equipado el paso, es necesario el uso de crampones, arnés, mosquetones, cinta express, etc. Mucha gente lleva incluso los piolets.
Hay que venir a conocer la región del macizo del Mont-blanc y esquiar tranquilamente en las pistas de Chamonix, Les Houches, Contamines..., donde la calidad de la nieve es única.
